As any major honors show approaches, there’s always a clamor for the addition fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the passions of followers who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- A different innovative game missed out that year
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
- Only a few logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games in the world and have been for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
