Weather Balloons Used to Smuggle Cigarettes Closed Airport in Lithuania

Recovered contraband balloons
At least 11 of the meteorological balloons, transporting 18,000 packs of illegal cigarettes, have been collected so far

Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.

Flight Disruptions

The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.

Border Security Response

Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.

As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.

Illegal Goods Seizure

No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.

Regional Smuggling Pattern

While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."

So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.

Cross-Border Effects

At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.

Criminal Methodology

Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."

International Concerns

The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.

Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
